How it works

Converting a file

  1. Open the converter and leave it on Convert.
  2. Drop your files on the box, click it to browse, or paste with Ctrl+V.
  3. The buttons that appear are the formats your file can become, an image offers JPG, PNG, WebP and PDF; a PDF offers images, text or Word; a Word document offers PDF or text.
  4. Press the button. It counts your files, so you can see what is about to happen.

Compressing

Switch to Compress. For images, around 80% quality is the usual sweet spot: roughly a fifth of the original size with no visible difference. Leave the format on Auto and each image is encoded every way your browser supports and kept at whichever came out smallest, a PNG screenshot often shrinks by 90% as WebP, while a photograph that happens to be a PNG is usually smallest as JPEG. What is actually being thrown away is worth knowing before you pick a number.

PDFs work differently. A browser cannot re-encode the images buried inside a PDF, so compressing one means re-rendering its pages. That shrinks scans enormously, because a scan is already a picture, but it turns any real text into part of an image, so it stops being selectable and searchable. The panel warns you before you press the button. If your PDF is text and already small, do not compress it.

Resizing

Switch to Resize, then give a width, a height, or one and let the other follow. Fit inside scales the whole image into your dimensions and crops nothing. Fill and crop covers the box and trims the overflow evenly, which is what avatars and thumbnails want. Stretch forces exact dimensions and distorts the picture. Enlarging invents no detail, a 400px image blown up to 2000px is a soft 2000px image, so go back to the original if you need it bigger.

Cleaning a file

Switch to Clean to take the hidden data out of a file: the coordinates of where a photograph was taken, the camera and the date; the author, the company and the editing software a PDF or a Word document records. Unlike the other three jobs this one never redraws anything. It rewrites the container and copies the contents across, so a photograph comes back identical bit for bit and a PDF keeps real, selectable text rather than being flattened into pictures.

It takes JPG, PNG and WebP, PDFs and Word .docx files. Where a name is part of the content rather than the properties, on a PDF comment or a tracked change in Word, it is named on the tile rather than quietly edited out. Why nothing is uploaded

Browsers have been able to decode, re-encode and rebuild files locally for years. Most converters still upload, because sending the file to a server is the easier way to build a website, and it means your file sits on a machine you do not control, under a retention policy you did not read. The files people convert are rarely holiday snaps; they are passport scans, contracts, medical letters and photographs of their children.

You do not have to take this on trust. Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and convert something: there is no upload to see. Once the page has loaded, a JPG, PNG or WebP even converts with your internet connection switched off, which would be impossible if a server were doing the work. The full check, and what it cannot tell you, takes about ninety seconds and works on any converter.

What it costs

Nothing, and there is no account. The site is paid for by advertising placed around the tool, never over it. Ads cannot see your files, because your files never leave your device for anyone to see.

What it cannot do

A browser reads far more image formats than it writes, it decodes almost anything, but can only produce JPG, PNG and WebP. Converting a PDF or a Word file to text recovers the words but not the design, because a PDF stores where marks sit on a page rather than what they mean. And a scanned PDF holds no text at all, only pixels; reading those needs OCR, which is a different job. If you cannot select the words in a PDF reader, nothing here will find them — and that applies equally to putting a photograph of a page into a Word document, which places the picture rather than typing out what it says.

The panel does a good deal more than this list — every image format it reads can become every format it writes — but a page exists only where there is something worth saying, rather than for every cell of a matrix.
