This is a compatibility rescue, and the story is nearly always the same. You saved an image from a web page, it arrived as a WebP because that is what the site serves now, and the thing you want to use it in will not open it. Older Photoshop, a council upload form, a print shop, a photo book service, a colleague on a corporate laptop.
JPG is the answer because JPG opens on everything and always has. There is no format with wider support and there has not been for thirty years, which is exactly why it remains the right choice whenever you cannot predict what will be at the other end.
Two things get lost on the way and one of them catches people out. If the WebP had a transparent background, JPG cannot keep it and the see-through areas are filled with the colour in the panel, white unless you change it. If the WebP was animated, you get the first frame as a still. When either matters, WebP to PNG keeps the transparency, and no image format will keep the animation.

Questions about WebP to JPG
Why will nothing open my WebP?
Because browser support and desktop support are two different things, and WebP won the first long before the second. Every browser has read it for years, which is why sites serve it, but plenty of desktop editors, older versions of Windows and macOS, email clients, print services and content systems still do not recognise the format. You did not do anything wrong; you saved a file in a format built for the web, and you are now trying to use it somewhere else.
Will the picture look worse?
Slightly, in principle, and almost never in a way you can see. The WebP is decoded and re-encoded as JPG, which is a second lossy pass on an image that has already had one, so a small amount of detail goes. At the default quality this is invisible on a photograph. It is more noticeable if the image is a screenshot or a graphic with text and hard edges, where JPG puts its errors exactly where you are looking.
What happens to a transparent background?
It is filled in, because JPG has no way to store transparency. The panel uses white by default and lets you choose another colour, which matters if the image is a logo going onto a coloured page: white will show as a rectangle around it. If the transparency needs to survive, convert to PNG instead, which keeps it exactly, at the cost of a considerably larger file.
My WebP was animated. What do I get?
The first frame, as a still picture. WebP can hold an animation and JPG holds exactly one image, so there is nothing else it could be. A browser canvas has no way to write an animation back out either, so no format on this site will preserve it. If you need the animation, keep the WebP and find something that opens it; converting is a one-way door here.
