PNG is the right target when the pages are not photographs. Invoices, contracts, forms, technical drawings, slide decks, anything with rules, tables, small type or fine lines: PNG renders every one of those exactly, and stays sharp when somebody zooms in.

The difference from JPG is not subtle on this kind of page. JPG compresses in eight-by-eight blocks and puts its errors where contrast is highest, which on a page of text means around the edge of every letter. At normal quality that is a faint grey haze you notice most in a screenshot of a table. PNG has no such artefact because it discards nothing.

The cost is file size, and on a page that is mostly white it is smaller than you would expect: flat areas compress extremely well in PNG. A dense page of text at 144 DPI is often only two or three times the equivalent JPG. If the pages are photographic, though, that ratio inverts sharply and PDF to JPG is the sensible choice.

    Questions about PDF to PNG

Why choose PNG over JPG for pages?

Because of what is on them. A page of text and rules is flat colour with hard edges, which is what PNG stores well and what JPG handles worst: JPG works in blocks and puts its errors at high-contrast boundaries, so letters and table lines pick up a faint grey halo. If your pages are scanned photographs or artwork, the reasoning reverses and JPG will give you a far smaller file that looks the same.

How many files will I get?

One PNG per page. A single page downloads as one image; several are bundled into a zip, because browsers throttle a burst of downloads triggered by one click and you would silently lose most of them otherwise. If you only want particular pages, enter a range before converting, written as 1-3, 7, 9- , and nothing else is rendered.

    Is the text still selectable?

No. Every page becomes a picture of itself, so text that could be selected and searched in the PDF is now a pattern of pixels. That is inherent to rendering a page as an image, not a limitation of PNG. If you want the words themselves, PDF to text pulls them out directly, and PDF to Word gives you something editable, both without any guessing.

The pages look soft even at high DPI. Why?

Almost certainly because the PDF is a scan rather than a document. A scanned page holds a photograph of paper at whatever resolution the scanner used, and rendering it at 600 DPI enlarges those pixels rather than discovering new ones. You can tell which kind you have by trying to select a word in a PDF reader: if nothing highlights, there is no text in the file and no setting here will sharpen it.
