Convert, compress and resize without uploading anything

Nothing is uploaded, and you can check

Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and convert something. There is no upload to see. The site also keeps working with your internet connection switched off, once the page has loaded, which would be impossible if a server were doing the work.

Most converters send your file away, do the work on their machines and send it back. That is the easier way to build a website, and it means your file sits somewhere you do not control under a retention policy you did not read. The files people convert are rarely holiday snaps. They are passport scans, signed contracts, medical letters and bank statements. Browsers have been able to do this work locally for years.

Converting images

Drop a HEIC, JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, SVG or ICO image and take it out as JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. Which one you want depends on what is in the picture:

• JPG opens everywhere, on everything, going back decades. It throws away detail to get small, and it cannot hold transparency. Right for photographs, and right whenever you are not certain what will open the file.
• PNG keeps every pixel exactly and keeps transparency. Right for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with hard edges or text in it. Larger than the others for photographs, often much larger.
• WebP is roughly a third smaller than JPG at the same visible quality and keeps transparency too. Every current browser reads it. Some older desktop software still does not.
• AVIF is smaller again than WebP, often half the size of a JPG, and the best choice for a photograph on a web page today. No browser can write one on its own, so picking AVIF fetches a real encoder to your device first. That is a few seconds and a few megabytes, once; every other converter charges you an upload for it.

HEIC is the one most people arrive for. iPhones shoot it by default, it stores a photo in about half the space of a JPG, and a great deal of software still refuses to open it. Converting to JPG makes the photo work everywhere again.

Compressing images and PDFs

Compress re-encodes a picture at a lower quality setting to make the file smaller. On a photograph you can usually take a great deal out before anyone could tell in a side-by-side comparison, which is why the quality slider starts at 80% rather than 100%. Auto encodes the same image several ways and keeps whichever came out smallest. Screenshots often shrink enormously as WebP, photographs usually do best as JPG, and guessing from the input alone gets it wrong often enough to matter.

Compressing a PDF works differently: its pages are re-rendered as images. That shrinks a scan considerably, and it stops any real text in the file being selectable or searchable. The panel says so before you press the button rather than after.

PDF and Word

A PDF can come out as images, one per page, with several pages arriving as a zip. It can also come out as plain text, or as a Word document. A Word .docx can become a PDF or plain text.

Two honest limits, because the alternative is a file that disappoints you later. PDF to Word recovers the text and the paragraph breaks, not the design: a PDF records where each glyph sits on the page, not what it means, so columns and tables cannot be reliably rebuilt. Word to PDF typesets the content with real selectable text, but it does not reproduce your fonts, images or complex tables, because that needs Word's own layout engine. Converters that promise otherwise are running your document through a server.

Resizing

Set an exact width, an exact height, or one of each. Leave one blank and it is worked out from the other, so the picture keeps its proportions. There are presets for the sizes people actually need: Instagram posts and stories, link previews, avatars, Full HD. You also choose what happens when the shape you asked for does not match the shape you have. Fit the whole image inside it, fill it and crop the overflow, or stretch.
