About this tool
Convert between image formats without uploading anything. It reads almost anything a browser can display, HEIC from an iPhone, AVIF and WebP from the web, PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, SVG and even Windows ICO files, and writes the three formats a browser can produce: JPG, PNG and WebP. Mix formats freely in one batch. When the target cannot store transparency you choose what colour goes behind it, rather than having black silently appear the way most software does.
Putting an image into a Word document
The panel will do it: pick Word and your picture is placed on the first page of a .docx, scaled down if it was wider than the page, and Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages all open the result. The image goes in as a PNG whatever it started as, because Word will not embed HEIC, AVIF or SVG.
What it does not do is read the words out of the picture. If your image is a photograph of a receipt, a scanned letter or a screenshot of text, and you want that text back as something you can edit, you want optical character recognition, and nothing here does it: OCR needs a trained model, and running one honestly in a browser is a different project from this one. Sites promising to turn a photograph of text into an editable document are running that model on their servers, with your image. That may be exactly what you want — it is worth knowing which of the two things you are being offered, because both get called "image to Word".
Which format should I convert to?
It depends on what is in the picture rather than on what it currently is, and the decision is set out properly here. The short version: photographs to JPG or WebP, anything with text or hard edges to PNG, and AVIF when the file is going on a web page and size is the point.
What can it read, and what can it write?
It reads HEIC, PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, SVG, ICO, and writes JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF.
That asymmetry is real. A browser decodes almost any image format ever shipped, because it has to display the web, but it only writes JPG, PNG and WebP itself. AVIF is here because we ship an encoder for it: about three megabytes of WebAssembly, fetched to your device only if you pick AVIF, and still nothing leaves your machine. A site offering to write TIFF is doing it on a server, with your file.
Which format should I pick?
- JPG: The safest choice: every device, upload form and printer accepts it.
- PNG: Lossless and keeps transparency, at the cost of much larger photographs.
- WebP: Smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, and keeps transparency.
- AVIF: The smallest of the four, often half a JPG. We ship the encoder, so it costs a one-off download.
