How to convert JPG to WebP

What changes, and what does not
Transparency is not gained
WebP can store transparency, but a JPG has none to give it. Converting cannot invent a transparent background; that needs an editor and a decision about which pixels should go.
The loss compounds
Both formats throw detail away to get small, so a JPG that was already compressed once is compressed again on the way to WebP, this time including the artefacts of the first pass. Convert from the original rather than from a copy, and do it once.

How much smaller will the file be?
It depends on the quality you choose. At the default the result is usually a little smaller, because WebP is the more efficient of the two, but the honest answer is that you are re-compressing something already compressed and the gain is modest. Drop the quality and the file drops with it.
Can I convert it back afterwards?
Each pass loses a little more, so a file converted back and forth repeatedly will visibly degrade. Once is fine. Doing it as a habit is not. Always start from whichever copy has been compressed fewest times.

Will the quality change?
WebP is lossy, so the image is decoded and re-encoded and a little detail is dropped. At high quality this is invisible. Convert once from your original rather than repeatedly, because each pass compounds.
