About PNG

About PDF
A fixed page description. It records where every glyph and line sits, which is why it looks identical everywhere and why pulling structure back out of it is hard.
What does the PDF look like?
One page per image, each page sized to the image it holds, in the order you dropped them. Nothing is scaled or padded, so the PDF is the same shape as your picture. If you want several images bound into one document instead of one PDF each, use images to PDF, which keeps the order you set.
Why would I put a picture in a PDF?
Almost always because something else insists on one. Upload forms for visas, courts, universities and insurers routinely accept a PDF and nothing else, even when what they are asking for is a photograph of a document. Print shops prefer PDFs because the page size is fixed and cannot be reinterpreted. And a PDF is the only one of these formats that can hold several pages, so it is how a set of scans becomes one attachment instead of six.
Does the picture lose anything?
Nothing visible. A PNG is converted to a lossless image inside the PDF, so every pixel survives. The PDF is a container around your picture rather than a new version of it. What it cannot do is make the image sharper: a PDF page has no resolution of its own, so a small picture stretched across a page is still a small picture.
How big will the PDF be?
Close to the size of the image, plus a small amount for the document structure around it. There is no compression pass and no down-scaling, which is deliberate, most people converting to PDF are sending it somewhere that will be read or printed, and quietly degrading it would be the wrong default. If the result is too large for an upload form, compress the image first and then convert.
One PDF each, or one PDF for all of them?
Dropping several images here gives you one PDF per image. If you want them bound into a single document in an order you control, use images to PDF instead, which keeps the order you set and puts each picture on its own page.
