What size is an X post image?
1600×900 pixels, which is 16:9. 1600×900 is 16:9, which is the shape a single image gets in a timeline. Post something squarer and it is cropped to roughly this in the feed, so people see your crop rather than your picture until they tap it.
The thing that catches people out
A tall image is cropped to a wide preview in the timeline and only opens in full when tapped. If the point of the picture is in the top or bottom of a portrait shot, most people will scroll past without ever seeing it.
What an X post image does to it afterwards
An image in a timeline is cropped to roughly 16:9 for the preview and only opens to its full shape when somebody taps it, which most people do not. 1600x900 means the preview is the picture rather than a slice of it. The platform also re-encodes on upload and will convert a large PNG to JPEG without asking, so a screenshot of text with fine type frequently comes out softer than it went in. Sending it already at 1600x900 as a clean JPEG avoids the worst of that.
What the crop takes off
Sixteen by nine off a 4:3 photograph takes roughly a quarter of the height, half from the top and half from the bottom. The more consequential crop happens afterwards and is not ours: the timeline shows a shallower slice of this image until somebody taps it, so anything that has to be readable belongs in the middle band.
Questions about an X post image
Why is my image cropped in the timeline?
Because the timeline shows a preview at roughly 16:9 and only opens the full picture when somebody taps it, which most people never do. Sending a 1600x900 image means the preview is the whole picture rather than a slice through the middle of a taller one. If you must post something tall, put the essential part in the central 16:9 band and treat the rest as a bonus for whoever taps.
Does the platform re-encode my file?
Yes, and it will change the format without telling you. A large PNG is routinely converted to JPEG on upload, which is why a screenshot of code or a table often arrives visibly softer than it looked on your machine. Sending it already at 1600x900 as a good-quality JPEG removes one of the two conversions and usually looks better than sending the PNG and hoping.
Does X re-compress the image?
Yes, and hard, which is the reason to hand it a clean 1600 by 900 file rather than an enormous one. Large uploads are re-encoded more aggressively, and an image already compressed once arrives carrying artefacts the second pass amplifies. If the picture contains text or is a screenshot, PNG survives their pipeline noticeably better than JPEG, and that is worth the larger upload.
