What size is a Facebook cover photo?

851×315 pixels, which is 2.70:1. 851×315 is what Facebook renders a desktop cover photo at. It is a wide, short strip, so as with any banner the picture has to be cropped rather than fitted, or you get grey bars either side.

The thing that catches people out

Facebook crops the cover differently on a phone than on a desktop, showing a narrower slice of the middle. Anything at the far left or right will be visible on one and not the other, so treat the centre as the only reliable part.

What a Facebook cover photo does to it afterwards

Facebook's cover slot has always been awkward because the desktop and mobile crops are different shapes: the page shows a wider band on a computer and a taller one on a phone, taken from the same file. The safe approach is to keep the subject central and horizontally generous, and to assume the left and right edges will be trimmed on mobile. The image is also re-encoded and served at a smaller size than you upload, so small text in a cover photo is usually unreadable where it matters.

    What the crop takes off

At 2.7 to 1 this is nearly as wide as a header, and about half the height of a 4:3 photograph is cut away, evenly from top and bottom. The left end also sits behind the profile picture in a desktop browser, so the genuinely safe area is narrower than the crop alone suggests.

Questions about a Facebook cover photo

Why does the cover look different on desktop and mobile?

Because they crop different shapes out of the same file. The desktop layout shows a wider, shorter band and the mobile layout a narrower, taller one, so the left and right edges of your image are visible on a computer and gone on a phone. There is no upload setting that reconciles them. Keeping the subject central and horizontally generous is the only approach that works on both.

Can I put text in a cover photo?

You can, and it is usually unreadable where it matters. Facebook serves the cover at a smaller size than you upload and re-encodes it, and the mobile crop moves whatever you positioned carefully. Anything essential, an address or a phone number, belongs in the page's own fields where it is real text and can be tapped. Treat the cover as a picture rather than as a sign.

What size does Facebook actually display?

Roughly 820 by 312 in a desktop browser and 640 by 360 on a phone, both from the single file you upload - which is why 851 by 315 is the size to give it, slightly larger than the desktop display so nothing is enlarged. The two displays are different shapes, so the top and bottom edges of your image are visible on one and cut on the other. Keep faces and text well inside the middle.
