What size is a Pinterest pin?
1000×1500 pixels, which is 2:3. 1000×1500 is 2:3, the shape Pinterest recommends and the shape that takes the most column height in a feed of tiles. A wide pin is shown small next to a tall one, which is most of why tall pins do better.
The thing that catches people out
Go much taller than 2:3 and Pinterest truncates the pin in the feed with a "see more", so the bottom of a very long graphic is invisible until someone opens it. 2:3 is the tallest shape that is shown whole.
What a Pinterest pin does to it afterwards
Pinterest is the one platform here where taller genuinely performs better, and 1000x1500 at 2:3 is what it asks for. Anything much taller than that gets truncated in the feed with a fade, so 9:16 is not a free upgrade. Pins have a long life compared with everything else on this list, months rather than hours, so the effort is better spent here than on a story. Text overlays are normal and expected on Pinterest, which is unusual, but they are cropped from the bottom in the grid view.
What the crop takes off
Two to three is a tall portrait, so a landscape photograph loses half its width getting here - the biggest sideways cut on this site. The tall shape is the whole reason pins work while being scrolled past, so re-cropping deliberately beats feeding a landscape photo through and accepting whatever the middle half turns out to be.
Questions about a Pinterest pin
Should the pin be taller than 2:3?
No. 1000x1500 is what Pinterest asks for and taller pins get truncated in the feed with a fade, so 9:16 buys you nothing and loses the bottom of your design. This is the opposite of the advice that works on Instagram and TikTok, and it is worth holding onto, because taller-is-better has become a reflex that costs you the end of the pin here.
Why does Pinterest reward effort more than the other platforms?
Because pins have a long life. A post on most networks is effectively over within a day, while a pin keeps surfacing in search and related feeds for months and sometimes years. That changes the arithmetic on how much work a single image deserves. It is also the one platform here where text over the image is normal and expected rather than a sign of an amateur.
Are taller pins better?
Up to the point 2:3 sits at, and not past it. Pinterest displays pins at 2:3 and truncates anything substantially taller in the feed, so a long infographic gets cut rather than shown - people have to open it to see the rest, and most do not. A 1000 by 1500 pin fills its column completely without being truncated, which is why it is the recommended size rather than simply the tallest one allowed.
