What size is an X header?

1500×500 pixels, which is 3:1. 1500×500 is 3:1, an unusually wide strip, and almost no photograph is that shape. That is the whole difficulty: something has to be cropped, and the only question is whether you choose what goes or the platform does.

The thing that catches people out

Your profile picture sits over the bottom-left corner of the header, and on a phone the header is cropped narrower still. Leave that corner empty and keep anything important in the middle third.

What an X header does to it afterwards

1500x500 is a 3:1 strip and the site crops it further on a phone, so it is less a picture than a band of colour with something in the middle. Your profile photo sits over the lower left corner, overlapping the header by about half its height, and on desktop the bottom edge is partly covered by the profile card. Keep anything meaningful in the upper middle. The image is re-encoded on upload and served small, so a subtle photograph tends to read as a smudge and a simple graphic does not.

    What the crop takes off

Three to one is a letterbox. From an ordinary 4:3 photograph that means losing about 56% of the height, taken equally from top and bottom, so whatever was in the top third of the frame is simply gone. This is the size where people most often discover their subject was never in the middle.

    Questions about an X header

How much does my profile picture cover?

A noticeable amount of the lower left. The avatar overlaps the header by roughly half its own height and sits in from the left edge, and on desktop the profile card covers a little more of the bottom besides. Whatever the header is for has to live in the upper middle. This is the most common mistake on the platform: a logo centred in the file ends up half behind an avatar.

Why does a photograph look bad as a header?

Because 1500x500 is a 3:1 strip and the site serves it small and re-encoded, so a photograph is reduced to a band with no room for a subject and no detail to read. Simple graphics, colour fields and large type survive that treatment; a landscape or a group photo does not. If you want a photograph there, crop it so a single clear subject occupies the middle third.

Why is my header cropped differently in the app?

Because the app and the website show different slices of the same file. The 3:1 image you upload is what the desktop site displays; the mobile app crops it shallower still, and the profile picture overlaps its lower left corner on both. The workable rule is to keep anything meaningful inside the central half and treat the outer thirds as bleed. A header that reads as a texture survives this. One built around text in a corner does not.
