What size is a LinkedIn profile banner?
1584×396 pixels, which is 4:1. 1584×396 is 4:1, wider even than an X header, and it is the strip behind your name on a LinkedIn profile. It is the one image on your profile you control completely, and it is almost always left as the default gradient.
The thing that catches people out
Your profile photo overlaps the bottom-left of the banner, and on a phone the banner is cropped shorter. Keep that corner clear, keep anything you need read in the right two thirds, and check it on a phone before you settle.
What a LinkedIn profile banner does to it afterwards
1584x396 is a 4:1 strip, the most extreme aspect ratio of any of these, and your profile photo sits over the lower left of it. On a phone the banner is cropped in from both sides, so a design that runs to the edges loses its ends. LinkedIn is also the platform where people most often put contact details or a tagline in the banner, and it is the one where that is least likely to be legible: the image is shown around 350 pixels wide in most feeds and search results.
What the crop takes off
Four to one is the most extreme shape here. Two thirds of the height of an ordinary photograph is removed, leaving a band. Photographs rarely survive that: this is the one size where an abstract texture or a flat colour usually looks more deliberate than a cropped picture does.
Questions about a LinkedIn profile banner
How much of the banner is safe to use?
The middle, and less of it than the 1584x396 file suggests. Your profile photo overlaps the lower left, and on a phone the banner is cropped in from both sides, so a design running edge to edge loses its ends. At 4:1 this is the most extreme strip of any of these slots, which means it works as a background rather than as a place to put a paragraph.
Is it worth putting my job title or contact details there?
Rarely, and this is the platform where people try it most. The banner is shown around 350 pixels wide in feeds and search results, at which size a line of contact details is a grey smudge. LinkedIn already has fields for all of it, which are real text, searchable and clickable. A banner earns its place by being recognisable at a glance, not by carrying information.
How much of the banner does the profile photo cover?
In a desktop browser the avatar sits over the lower left, covering roughly the first fifth of the width and overlapping the bottom third of the height. On mobile it moves and covers less. Because the banner is only 396 pixels tall to begin with, that overlap removes most of the usable area on the left. Compose for the right two thirds, or use something that reads the same wherever it happens to be cut.
