What size is an Instagram post?

1080×1080 pixels, which is 1:1. Instagram stores a square post at 1080×1080 and re-compresses anything larger down to that width. Sending a 4000px photograph does not buy you a sharper post; it buys you Instagram own resizer, which is worse than doing it yourself. Do the scaling here and the platform has less left to do.

The thing that catches people out

The grid on a profile crops every post to a square regardless of what you uploaded, so a portrait photograph loses its top and bottom in the grid even though the post itself is fine. If the composition matters in the grid, square it here and see the crop before anyone else does.

What an Instagram post does to it afterwards

Instagram downscales whatever you send to 1080 pixels wide and re-encodes it, fairly hard, so a picture that was already compressed arrives with visible mush in flat areas. Send the cleanest 1080x1080 you have rather than something squeezed for an upload limit. The square is also no longer the default in the feed, where 4:5 portrait takes up more vertical space and stops the scroll better, so a square post is a deliberate choice about grid tidiness rather than reach. On the profile grid it shows as a square regardless.

    What the crop takes off

A square from a 4:3 photograph loses the sides - a quarter of the width, taken equally from left and right. That is kinder than it sounds for a portrait and brutal for a group shot, where the people on the ends are exactly what goes. The crop is centred, so an off-centre subject needs cropping by hand first.

    Questions about an Instagram post

Should I post square or portrait?

Portrait, in almost every case, if reach is what you are after: 1080x1350 occupies about a quarter more of the screen as somebody scrolls, and that is most of the reason it performs better. Square is the right choice when the grid on your profile is the thing you are designing, because the grid crops everything to a square anyway, and a portrait post loses its top and bottom there.

Why does my picture look worse after uploading?

Instagram downscales to 1080 pixels wide and re-encodes at a fairly aggressive setting, and it does that regardless of what you send. The damage is worst when the file was already compressed, because the second pass works on the first one's artefacts. Send a clean 1080x1080 that has not been squeezed for an upload limit, and accept that flat areas of colour, skies especially, will still show some banding.

    Is 1080 pixels still enough?

Yes. Instagram has served feed posts at 1080 wide for years, and uploading something larger does not buy a sharper post - it buys the same 1080-pixel result after their re-encode, from a file that took longer to send. Uploading exactly 1080 means no resampling happens on their side at all. The case worth avoiding is the other one: an 800-pixel image enlarged to 1080 looks soft next to everything around it.
