HEIC and Word side by side
| HEIC | Word | |

| Where it came from | 2017, when Apple made it the iPhone camera default | 2007, when Office moved to an XML format |
| Where it opens | Apple devices natively. Windows needs an extension from the Store, and many web forms reject it outright. | Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages |
| Best at | Storing camera photos on an iPhone, where the space saving is real and everything can read it | A document still being written, where the structure has to stay editable |
About HEIC
What every iPhone shoots by default. Half the non-Apple world refuses to open it.
About Word
A .docx describes a document rather than a page: this is a heading, this is a list. That is what makes it editable.
Worth knowing: Only .docx is read. The older .doc format is a different, undocumented binary.
Read this before you use it
This places your picture inside a Word document, sized to fit the page. It does not read the words out of the image. If your HEIC is a photo of a receipt, a scanned letter or a screenshot of text and you want that text back as something you can edit, you want OCR, and this is not it. Nothing here does OCR: it needs a trained model, and running one honestly in your browser is a different project from this one.
Sites that promise to turn a photograph of text into an editable document are running OCR on their servers, with your image. That may be exactly what you want. It is worth knowing which of the two things you are being sold, because both are called "HEIC to Word".
What you get
A .docx with your image on the first page, scaled down if it was wider than the page and left alone if it was not. Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages all open it. The image goes in as a PNG whatever it started as, because Word will not embed HEIC.
