How to convert AVIF to PNG
- Drop your AVIF files onto the box above, or paste them with Ctrl+V.
- Pick a quality. Around 90% is indistinguishable from the original for most images.
- Your browser does the work on your own machine.
- Save each file from its tile, or take them all at once.
What changes, and what does not
Animation is lost
A AVIF can hold many frames and a PNG holds one, so you get the first frame as a still image. A browser canvas cannot write animation back out, and a converter that claims to is doing it on a server with your file.
The file will usually grow
PNG stores every pixel exactly, including the compression artefacts already baked into your AVIF. It preserves them faithfully rather than removing them, and it takes more space to do it. Converting cannot recover detail already discarded.
Colour
AVIF: millions, with 10 and 12 bit depth and wide colour where the source has it. PNG: up to 16.7 million, plus 256 levels of transparency.
AVIF and PNG side by side
| AVIF | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it came from | 2019, built on the AV1 video codec | 1996, designed as a free replacement for GIF |
| Throws detail away | Yes | No, every pixel is kept |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Animation | Yes | No |
| Where it opens | Every current browser. Outside the browser, support is still thin. | Everywhere, without exception, since the late nineties |
| Best at | Photographs on a web page you want as small as they can honestly go | Screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with text or hard edges in it |
How much smaller will the file be?
Expect it to grow, often several times over. PNG stores every pixel exactly, and the pixels it is storing include the compression artefacts your AVIF already has. It is faithfully preserving damage rather than removing it.
Can I convert it back afterwards?
You can go back, and it will look the same, because PNG did not throw anything away. What you cannot do is recover the detail your AVIF lost before it ever reached this page. That is gone whatever you convert it to.
About AVIF
The newest and smallest of the web formats. Support outside browsers is still thin.
Worth knowing: Needs a browser released in the last few years to decode.
About PNG
Lossless and keeps transparency, at the cost of much larger photographs.
Will the quality change?
PNG is lossless, so nothing is thrown away in the encoding. If the AVIF was itself lossy, its existing artefacts are preserved faithfully. Converting cannot recover detail that was already discarded, and the file will usually get considerably larger.
Other conversions
AVIF also converts to JPG, WebP, PDF and Word.
PNG also comes from HEIC, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP.
